What are you looking for in a newborn photographer? There is one thing that should be at the very top of your concern list and that is newborn safety!! There are no regulations or training required in the newborn photography industry, so how do you know that your photographer is qualified for the job? Don’t be afraid to ask your newborn photographer a lot of questions. The more you know about your photographer the more comfortable you will feel about them working with your brand new baby! The most important questions though I would ask is how do ensure the safety of newborns during a photoshoot? Do the work with an assistant? These are important questions to know before you schedule.

Did you know some newborn studios do not allow parents in the room during portraits? This is an important question to ask before booking a session. I have no doubt that studios with this requirement are safe and your baby is in good hands, however if you are unaware of this it may take you by surprise when you arrive for your portraits. One tip is to keep baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session. It’s important though that you don’t keep them awake longer. Newborns need to sleep and if they are awake for too long they may become over tired and really hard to settle! 1 - 2 hours is the ideal time!

The newborn phase is very brief. In a few short weeks after your baby’s birth he/she will begin to become more alert. They will begin to fill out and just like that they are no longer a newborn. For newborn studio portraits it’s important to photograph newborns within the first 3 weeks of birth. In my years of experience I find the 2nd week to be the sweet spot. In order to pose a newborn they must be sleepy and relaxed and still flexible for posing.

Fur babies are just as much a part of the family and I’m glad sweet girl was able to be included in a photo! They are often our babies before having babies!

The best time for newborn portraits is within the first 2 weeks of the baby’s birth. This is when they are most sleepy and cooperative and posable. It’s a good idea to reserve your spot with your photographer several months in advance to ensure they have room in their schedule for whenever you little one decides to make his or her appearance!
