Newborn Portraits in Richmond Virginia

In all of my years of photographing newborn babies I have never had a newborn not spit up or go to the bathroom (multiple times) all over my blankets and other props. It's completely expected and just goes with the territory.  Well, you're about to meet Baby Benjamin who has made history ladies and gentleman! I can't believe it, but Benjamin is the first newborn who didn't get one single mark on any of my things!! Mom, Dad, Big sister and Big brother made it out dry too! I couldn't believe it.  Not only did Benjamin not christen all of my belongings, but he slept like a log the entire time. Kudos to Mom and Dad for following my instructions by keeping him up the few hours before his session and waiting to feed him until they arrived at the studio. It really makes a world of difference!

Baby Benjamin was accompanied by his Mom, Dad, big sister Sitlany and big brother Juve. Sitlany and Juve were absolutely precious with their new little brother. They were both so sweet and gentle with Benjamin. Sitlany is going to be Benjamin's godmother and I have no doubt that she will watch over him throughout his entire life.  Although I've only met Sitlany twice it is evident that nurturing comes naturally to her. There's a purity and innocence about her and when asked if there were any pictures she wanted with her baby brother she had a vision in mind and I am thrilled that everything that I saw in her translated through the image.

Juve was so sweet too, although he wanted nothing to do with laying his head towards the bottom half of his naked baby brother, he humored me and did so with hesitation. I give him a lot of credit because it was a very dangerous game we were playing, but thankfully everyone made it through clean!

Meet Baby Sloane & Family | Newborn portraits in Richmond Virginia

Some of you may remember that gorgeous mama I photographed just a few short weeks ago in the snow. I am so excited to introduce you to Emily's entire family and the newest addition, Baby Sloane! For those of you who don't know the story I'll give you the quick version. During Richmond's great blizzard of 2015 (ha!) Emily posted in a photography group that I belong to asking if anyone wanted to "play in the snow" with a 36 week preggers and take some fun pictures. I responded and the rest is history!!

Emily's maternity pictures were absolutely stunning and I was so honored when she asked me to photograph her baby's new born portraits! I was very excited and couldn't wait to meet the entire family who wasn't there for the maternity session. When Emily had her first son, Silas, she delivered in the hospital, but for her second Emily and her husband Jeff decided they wanted to deliver their baby girl at home. With Jeff by her side along with two amazing women Sara Fariss Krivanec  from MotherBaby Doula Services and Midwife Nancy Giglio of Richmond Birth Services baby Sloane arrived just a couple of weeks later on March 2 at 8:45 pm weighing 7lbs 1 oz and 20 inches long! Emily delivered Sloane in a birthing tub that belonged to Emily's midwife and has been through many births. As each newborn becomes part of this tubs history parents paint their story for future generations to see.

When I went to Emily's for Sloane's newborn portraits the tub was still there and it was so cool seeing everyone's paintings.

Sloane was perfect during her newborn session! She slept when she needed to and rocked her photo shoot. She had the most adorable hats and wraps that grandma Rona Greenwald, known as Safta,(hebrew for grandmother) made. Big brother Silas was so adorable and did exactly what a big brother is supposed to do during a photo shoot, climb all over Mommy and make me work really hard for these pictures! Emily, Jeff, Silas and Sloane, thank you so much for allowing me into your home to capture such special moments of your family! Much love and happiness to you all!

Jeff made this cast of Emily during her pregnancy with Silas and sent it away to Emily's friend, Stephanie Donaldson, a very talented artist of Purple Penguin Art Studio, where she turned the cast into beautiful art!

Meet baby Lucy who arrived on November 16, 2014 at 11:26 pm! Weighing in at a whopping 10lbs 2oz!! If you think that is big for a newborn would you believe that I weighed 11 lbs 1 oz when I was born? My poor mother will confirm this fact! I was very concerned when I was pregnant with my first child and repeatedly harassed the doctor if she could tell how big the baby was getting. I thought for your I was going to deliver a 12 lb turkey. Thankfully Brennan, at 2 weeks early, was only 7lbs 5.3oz. My sister was the one with the big babies. Big babies are great because they don't seem as fragile! Oh and of course there is nothing cuter than all of those baby rolls!! Just look at how adorable Lucy is! I just want to snuggle her up like a wrinkly teddy bear! All those extra rolls came in handy during posing too. Especially the cheeks in hand pose! Lucy arrived at the studio for her newborn portraits and was a perfect angle from start to finish!! She slept most of the time just waking up when she needed a snack and then right back to bed!

Time goes by so fast and newborns change from day to day. You have a very short window to absorb as much of them as you can. I am so thankful that I am able to capture for parents those fleeting moments before they are gone forever as I know all too well from experience. Welcome baby Lucy! I wish you all the love and happiness in the world!!

Too Little Feet Too Little Time

Too little feet, ten little toes, leave their impression today.

Soon they will wear two little shoes and be running and jumping at play.

Two little feet, too little time, before they are walking to school,

kicking a rock, or skipping a rope, wading a puddle or jumping in pools.

Two little feet, one little child, will soon go their own way,

but footprints in my mind recall

they stood here yesterday.

Meet my third newborn to be photographed in the new Midlothian newborn studio! Baby JP! At 5 days old JP's mom and grandma brought him to me so that I could practice some poses and studio lighting. This session was a portfolio building session so I had three poses in mind that I wanted to get from this teeny tiny little man. If I got 2 out of the 3 I would be a happy lady. Everything was just right, the room was 85-90 degrees, the posing beanbag was toasty warm, soothing white noise was filling the room, but JP wasn't having it! He feel asleep for about 2 seconds and then he was bright eyed and bushy tailed the rest of the time. I've never seen a 5 day old baby so alert. We tried everything, but this little man wasn't going to do anything he didn't want to do. He was a stubborn little thing, but so am I so I wasn't about to quit. I was determined to get those 3 poses (well at that point I was settling for one good pose). Four hours later we all realized it wasn't going to happen. So Maegan was kind enough to agree to come back the following week and we would try again. (Fast forward to the next week) JP won. He proved to be more stubborn than I was and after 2 hours I gave in and let him do his thing. Turns out little JP at almost 10 days old taught me an invaluable lesson.

Years ago I had a dream of having my own newborn studio and I'm still finding it difficult to believe that the dream has finally come true!! I am excited to share my first newborn session in my new studio! This means no more lugging my entire studio from house to house! I had the studio and all I needed were some babies to practice on. I am used to working with natural light and unfortunately my studio gets very little light, so it's time to start learning some studio light! As luck would have it my neighbor Kristen was pregnant and was kind enough to offer up her brand new baby boy for me to practice with! He was an excellent model! Here are a few of my favorites! Welcome to the world Baby Ben!

Baby Paxton |Newborn Photography in Midlothian VA | Sarah Kane Photography

This is a very exciting time for the Miller family as they welcome baby Paxton to the family! It's also a very exciting time for me because I had the honor of photographing Paxton's oldest brother as a newborn and now him! When I photographed Grayson as a newborn he was among the first newborns I ever photographed. I packed up my portable studio and headed over to the Miller's house. I ended up setting up on her bed and felt terrible when Grayson peed all over her comforter. The last thing a brand new mom wants to worry about is having to clean her comforter!! Many lessons have been learned since then and I've come a long way!

Just as Grayson was the first among the newborns I photographed Paxton too is among one of the first to be photographed in my brand new newborn studio!!!  I am so excited to make this dream come to life! I love photographing newborns, but I have to admit I'm not a big fan of loading up my car with several blankets, posing beanbag, wraps, hats, heater, baskets, bowls and backdrops. Then there's the setting up of the stand that I made (and when I say I, I mean my husband) out of PVC piping that I had to number because it was like an impossible puzzle to piece together (I'm exhausted just thinking about all of that).  I was beat too after every shoot, carrying everything down my stairs, to my car, into the clients home, typically up their stairs, then back down their stairs to my car, back into my house and up my stairs! I loved shooting newborns, but I knew I couldn't go on like that. The wheels started turning and I made it happen. I couldn't have done it though without my husband busting his butt on his week home to help me finish painting and lay the new floor so that it would be ready in time for all of these babies that were about to be born! The studio still needs some finishing touches, but it is fully functional and I was so excited to be able to photograph baby Paxton in the new space! He was free to pee wherever he'd like and that he did! Well, enough blabbing it's time to meet this adorable baby boy. Welcome to the world baby Paxton!

Newborn Photographer in Midlothian Virginia | Lifestyle Portraits at Sunday Park in Brandermill

family portraits | Sunday Park Midlothian | Sarah Kane Photography

I consider myself to be a "life photographer". I photograph people's lives and tell their story through pictures and I love every moment of it! I have met so many wonderful people through photography and am always touched to witness all of the love and happiness that families share. From weddings, to maternity, to newborns, to watching families grow I am so fortunate to be a part of it and couldn't imagine doing anything else!

For the past 3 years I've donated a photography package to my son's preschool at Primrose for their annual spring fling silent auction. All of the proceeds raised goes to charity, so I am always more than happy to do it! This year the Crabtree family won the package which was absolutely perfect seeing as they were just a few short weeks away from meeting their second son Jacob! At just 7 days old I got to meet him and the entire Crabtree family and be apart of this exciting new adventure they're on. Before even meeting them I had been emailing with Ryan (dad) making arrangements and his excitement and pride for his family was so evident that I knew this was going to be an awesome photo shoot and it was! Andrea (mom) a week after giving birth and mother of two boys just 18 months apart didn't seem a bit tired or overwhelmed.  The absolute sweetest thing I've seen was Big brother Brandon holding his dad's ear like a security blanket. He also loved giving hugs (more like smothers) and kisses to his new built in best friend! My sister and I are only 19 months apart and nobody knows me better than she does. Although we fought like crazy we did everything together and she is definitely my absolute best friend.  Well, enough about me let's meet this lovely family shall we?

Now that Brandon's in his own environment you'll really see his personality shine!

Get ready for some serious cuteness overload!!

Preparing for a Newborn Session | Sarah Kane Photography

Preparing for a Newborn Session | Sarah Kane Photography

Every baby is different and there is no way to ensure a sleepy baby once in the studio. Even the sleepiest of babies can suddenly become wide awake once in front of the camera.  I use several soothing techniques to try and keep your baby cozy and sleeping, but there are things you can do at home before your session that will really have the biggest impact! Keep in mind though babies are unpredictable and despite all efforts some babies will not sleep. That's ok though, I will wrap him/her up tight and still get priceless images for you!

Newborn Lifestyle | Black & White | Sarah Kane Photography

There are so many things I love about being a photographer and I feel so fortunate to be able to do this full time. One of the things that I love so much about photography is the ability to freeze time. My camera is to me what Thor's hammer is to him. It is my superpower. I am able to take a moment that otherwise would have been lost and preserve it for a lifetime.  I only have seconds to grab those moments because in a blink of an eye they are gone forever.  When I became a mother is when I heard the calling. I was desperate to hold on to every little moment because before you know it that little baby you held through the night is heading off to kindergarten. I needed to  stop time and the only way to do it was through my lens.

I was so excited to photograph the Phipp's newest addition to their family. I had the honor of photographing Melanie during her first pregnancy and then photographing sweet Natalie when she was born. It was such a thrill to be able to now photograph Natalie as a new big sister and what an awesome big sister she is to Charlotte!

There is no greater thing on earth than the love and strength of a family. Melanie & Derek have the sweetest little family! Natalie & Charlotte are so lucky to have such loving and fun parents. I'm so grateful that I was invited into their home and allowed to share some moments of their life, welcoming baby Charlotte to the family, with all of you!

I chose to publish this session in mostly black & white because black & white make me feel the moment so much more!

Most important rule when visiting a brand new big sister spend some time with her first!

You just can't get pictures like these in a studio!
