Parent's biggest fear for family portraits is that their kids are not going to cooperate and guess what? They're right! My advice to parents is to come to terms with the fact that their kids are going to be unpredictable and very likely uncooperative. Accepting that fact and staying calm is the key to a great portrait session! These parents were rock stars!! This little man was not happy at all, but they stayed calm, kept smiles on their faces and eventually together we captured some very sweet moments

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this line, “wow, your camera takes great pictures”. If you are a photographer I am sure you are cringing right about now. There is so much more to taking a great family photo than a good quality camera. I know this from experience. My first DSLR was a “good” camera and I had no idea how to use it. I assure you I did not produce the same quality images as I do now. First, you have to know how to operate your camera and control it in manual mode. Never let your camera control you! A fancy camera will do you no good if you don’t know how to operate it. Next, you have to understand that lighting is everything! Not all light is quality light. Time of day matters. Which direction the light is coming from matters. Shade does not always mean good light. Finally, Location, location, location! I cannot say enough about this. I’ve spent a lot of time scouting for the best spots for family portraits in the Richmond VA area and I’m always on the look out for unique places that offer pretty scenery and most importantly good light!

I love photographing this family! I first met them when mom was pregnant with the youngest. I was told that big sister doesn’t do very well with photos and doesn’t warm up to people easily, but we hit it off right away! I’ve since done many pictures for this family. When I met them for this fall’s mini session Big Sister gave me the biggest hug!! So many reasons to be grateful for my work! Can’t wait to meet baby number three!!!
