How To Prepare For Professional Headshots and Portraits

Preparing For Professional Headshots

Clothing

  • Solid colors look great in head shots.

  • If going with a pattern keep it simple.

  • Clothing should be fitted. Baggy or loose clothing could look sloppy on camera. Make sure jackets are not too tight and create wrinkles.

  • Start with a simple shirt or blouse and slowly add layers.

  • Once you choose your outfit sit in front of a mirror and see if your clothing creates wrinkles or bunches up. Try out several different poses with your arms and body angle and see how your clothing reacts.

  • You may want to bring a couple of clothing choices with you just in case.

  • Make sure that ALL clothes are ironed before the shoot. Wrinkles in clothes are difficult to edit out and could require additional fees if editing is possible.

  • If you have pets or your clothing collects lint bring a lint brush or roller with you.

Men

  • Make sure you are clean shaven

  • Make sure all facial hair is trimmed (be sure to clean up neck as well)

  • I'd recommend a fresh hair cut a few days before

  • Be sure the nape of the neck is also shaved.

Hair and Makeup

  • Hair should be free of frizz as much as possible. Consider using a lot of hairspray to keep hair in place.

  • Wear makeup as you would wear it to work. If you don't wear makeup I strongly suggest wearing foundation or powder, blush or bronze and mascara.  I would also bring along lip gloss.

  • If your lips are chapped do not wear lipstick. You can help prevent chapped lips by drinking plenty of water several days before, avoid Chap stick, but do put a generous amount of Vaseline on your lips each night before bed. Use a sugar scrub daily to remove peeling skin.
