It makes me happy to do unexpectedly kind things for people. One of my favorite things to do is to pass out my 20% off coupons at Bed Bath & Beyond while waiting in line. I have way too many coupons and it is no sacrifice to share them with others. People are so appreciative of this small gesture of kindness and I always leave feeling so much happier then when I first walked in. Handing out coupons that I have an overabundance of to strangers is not a noble act by any means, but sometimes just the simplest gesture can really make someone's day. I know when a stranger, family member or friend does something like this for me it completely lifts my spirits and makes me want to pass it on, pay it forward, give back or whatever your phrase of choice (I like to call it the "circle of kindness").
I had another opportunity to show kindness towards a family while killing time between my morning and evening fall mini sessions. There was a lovely family all dressed up and mom was expecting. Dad was taking pictures which I'm sure turned out wonderful, but there was one problem. Dad would not be able to be in any of the pictures. I had plenty of time before my next session and I couldn't stand the thought of Dad not being in any of these pictures. I am always left out of family pictures because I'm the one taking them. Not that I really enjoy being in front of the camera (because I don't), but someday pictures of me are going to mean so much to my kids and I know how important they will one day become. I decided to offer to take a few pictures for them free of charge. This was not really a big sacrifice for me because I had about a 2 hour wait before my next session (it was just easier to stay there rather then pack up all of my things and come back) I could probably get the pictures edited in that time also. The family accepted my offer with hesitation (I'm sure they thought there was a catch), but there wasn't. It didn't take them long to relax and they were so appreciative and it truly made my day! We all have busy lives and it can be hard to find the time to volunteer for a cause that can have a huge impact on the world. Sometimes though a small act of kindness towards someone can have such a rippling affect that it can make a bigger difference than you think. Do something kind for someone every day and you will be a happier person!
